Which Dog Breeds Made The Nice List This Year?

Some of the most well-behaved dog breeds include:

  • Irish Setters
  • Labrador Retrievers
  • Border Collies
  • Leonbergers
  • Newfoundland dogs
  • St. Bernard
  • Beagles

What makes some of these the most obedient dog breeds? Many of these are the most intelligent and among the friendliest dog breeds, meaning they want to please their human parents and will work hard to make you proud. Obedient dogs tend to be easy to train, calm and well-behaved with other dogs and with humans. They don’t tend to get overly excited, either, which helps keep them from acting out.

Obedient Breeds

Let’s take a closer look at the dogs with a reputation for good behavior:

  • Irish Setters. These dogs were originally bred to be bird dogs, so they tend to be obedient since this is an important personality trait when tracking and bringing back birds. These higher energy dogs are loyal and love people, meaning they are willing to work hard to make their humans happy. Since they are high energy, they do require training to ensure their excitement doesn’t get away from them, but they are definitely willing to work with their human families to be good dogs.

  • Labrador Retrievers. Labradors are bred to obey, and they actually enjoy training and following orders, making them one of the most obedient dog breeds out there. They do have lots of energy, so you need to ensure you practice obedience training, but you will find your lab more than willing to jump on board and work to follow your orders.
  • Border collies. Border collies were originally bred to work on farms, herding livestock. Because of this, they have been bred to work with humans and to follow direction in all kinds of conditions. Since they are considered to be one of the world’s smartest dog breeds, it is relatively easy to train them, and they are very receptive to commands. Border collies are very high energy, so the one caveat is to make sure they stay engaged.

  • Leonbergers. Leonbergers are very obedient, intelligent and gentle dogs. They are loyal and want to take part in everything your family does, making them very well-behaved companions. They are very large dogs, however, so obedience training is a must.
  • Newfoundland dogs. These dogs are so loyal, gentle and caring they are sometimes called “nanny” dogs because of how well they get along with children. Intelligent and eager to please their humans, Newfoundlanders are easy to train and are bred to listen to their owners. In Newfoundland, where they originate, they are sometimes taken on board fishing vessels, where they are as obedient as any member of the crew.

  • St. Bernard. This dog breed in years past was used to rescue humans lost in the mountains. One reason monks and rescue workers in Switzerland and other countries used saints to help them is that this dog breed is very eager to please, loyal and highly trainable. Their high intelligence makes them capable of learning fast.
  • Beagles. Beagles are very smart and are bred to be hunting dogs, which means they work well with their humans and are easily trainable. They are high energy, so they benefit from exercise as well as ongoing training.

Of course, even with the best dog breeds for obedience, you need to ensure frequent, early and consistent training to really bring out their best behavior.
